Isn’t It Time You Raised Your Career Aspirations?

Isn’t it time you raised your career aspirations? You should if…

  • You are stuck in a job you hate.
  • You come into work bored every day.
  • You are unemployed but have little passion for the jobs you are applying for.
  • You are managing on a small income but would like more spending power.
  • You feel as if life is slipping you by and you have nothing to show for it.

Yes, I realise changing a career is difficult. We understand that it’s not easy thinking about where you could be in life when you’re busy juggling other life commitments.

But as John Lennon once famously sang…

Life is what happens to you when are busy making other plans.

Think about it. Do you really want to be in the same position careerwise that you are in today? Did you once have dreams that have become unfulfilled? Do you feel as if you are stuck in the revolving door that life has thrown at you? Are your talents not being used? Do you ever wake up in the morning and shout…

If any of those things are true, then yes, you should start to raise your career aspirations before time passes you by. Of course, you may already have an inkling to do this. You know you should make the effort. But knowing it and doing it are two different things. There may be signs that it’s time to quit your job, but it’s a risky proposition. You may have a grand agenda, but other people may be putting you down. There may be a job you want but you don’t feel good enough. You want something else, but you don’t know where to start. I get it, we really do. If any of these things are relevant to you, know that you are not alone. Hundreds and thousands of people are stuck in the same situation, toiling away, wishing for something better to come along.

And they, like you, may be stuck there for years to come. Unless changes are made.

Here is a saying worth remembering:

If you want something you have never had before, you have to do something you have never done before!

Understand? You have to make the move forwards. It’s very rare that somebody else will open the doors to your dreams for you. So perhaps today is the day you look at your life. Ask yourself:

  • What do I want from life?
  • What is my dream job?
  • What will fuel my passion?

And then take steps to better your position. What that means to you is personal – I am not you so I don’t have every answer – but you might want to think on the following things.

  • Go back into education. Yes, we realise you probably relished the fact that school was finally over, but if you need certain skills and qualifications for a new job or a promotion in your current workplace, then you really should get the training required. You may never achieve what you want otherwise. You see, with training, the sky really is the limit, especially if you take pilot training! We are joking about that last point, although if you ever wanted to fly a plane, why not consider it? If you ever wanted to make a difference in the world, why not consider training to be a teacher, nurse, social worker, or environmentalist? If you ever wanted to see the world, why not consider training to be a travel agent, flight attendant, travel journalist, or again, an airline pilot? There are courses online and off. Some can be taken part-time while you’re working and others will require a bigger commitment. Whatever the case, surely it’s worth it if you are going to achieve your goals. Isn’t it? The answer is yes, so consider what it is you want, and research the appropriate courses to help you get there!
  • Get in touch with the people who can help you. This means speaking to your boss (or his/her boss) if you want to rise higher in your current position. This means using social media to contact people in jobs you are interested in (LinkedIn is especially useful). This means getting along to conferences, job fairs, public meetings, and shaking hands with the people who matter. This means looking at the people you know in your life currently – are they in a position to open new doors for you? To reach new places in your life, you do need to become a social butterfly, fluttering from one person to the next with a level of persistence. Knock on doors. Send emails. Hand in your resume to the people who matter. Short of stalking employers, do all you can to let people know you exist, and especially if you have the skills needed for the job, you may make a positive impression with your persistence and diligence.
  • Ditch the naysayers. You may be full of aspirations, but there will others who will try and put you down. So-called friends may mock you for trying to reach higher. Family members may doubt your efforts. You will be confronted by people who are only envious because they haven’t had the courage to pursue their dreams. You will be faced with people who think they know what matters in life, but their values shouldn’t be imposed upon your life. You will face criticism if you look for a job that your passionate about, but pays less than your current salary. You will have the words of many reverberating through your mind, and that also includes the doubting words you impose upon yourself. Well, tell these naysayers where to go (in as polite a way as possible), and have a word with yourself in the mirror too. THIS IS YOUR LIFE!! If you want something, then strive for it, no matter what anybody else thinks. Prove the naysayers wrong. Find out what you want and go for it!

And on reading this article, you can do one of two things.

You can nod your head in agreement, but still resign yourself to where you are in life, or…

You can take my words to heart and do something about your future.

If it is time you raised your career aspirations, perhaps today is the day you do it!!

We wish you every success.
