Do you know how to create a proper streetwear outfit? With the emerge of a relaxed fashion trend, I decided to adjust my wardrobe and follow a couple of urban style trends. The truth is that creating a stylish outfit – either a street style look, grunge or an eccentric ensemble – calls for smart judgement and a careful selection of staples that you can build your wardrobe upon.
Today I am showing you my makeover of the streetwear movement. In addition, I share an ultimate streetwear style guide on how to apply this trend without breaking your bank account or having to completely update your wardrobe.

High-End Meets Streetwear
It’s no secret that high-fashion collections have been inspired by streetwear for the past half-decade now. Borrowing ideas from the streets and translating urban style into luxury Ready-to-Wear collections is not a new idea, though. A good example is Yves Saint Laurent, – a very classy and old-fashioned French designer. Yet, he regularly drew inspiration from the surrounding him streets of Paris back in 1960’s.
Nowadays, a number of high-end fashion designers take their inspiration from streetwear. Virgil Abloh at OFF-White, Riccardo Tisci’s at Givenchy, Daisuke Yokoyama at Sasquatchfabrix, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Alexander Wang, to name a few. I don’t know about you, but I am not going to miss out on this trend. Streetwear is not only extremely ‘hot’ and stylish, but also very comfortable and easy to wear. What’s not to love about it?
Goof-Proof Streetwear Style Basics
Just like any other style, streetwear has its own rules. But nothing to worry about. Once you understood the basics, you will be able to nail any of your looks within a couple of minutes.
WEAR IT OVERSIZED
This is probably the easiest and the first thing you need to learn when researching urban style essentials. Oversized jackets and coats have been very IN for the last couple of years. Recently, wide and long sweaters became a must-have in every girl’s wardrobe. Remember how we all went crazy shopping for all these chunky knit sweaters last autumn and winter? Exactly.
In order to master oversized trend, you don’t always need to buy clothes that were designed to be oversized. To be honest, most of the times, I just get clothes that are 1-3 sizes bigger than my normal size. It works extremely well with coats, jackets, T-shirts, jeans and even shorts. To save some money, borrow some pieces from your boyfriend’s wardrobe. I am sure he would not mind. In fact, he will find it very flattering. Whoop whoop!
Layering is Best Done From Thin to Thick
Layering is another widely used trick when creating a proper streetwear outfit. The rule is easy – wear as many layers as you can. This will make it easy to regulate your temperature by removing the outer layer without compromising the style of your outfit. Don’t forget you still need to be able to move in it, haha. So do not go over the top.
My advice for layering is to build your look from thin to thick. For example, wear a T-shirt first, then put an undone shirt on top and cover it all with a sweater. A great way to finish the look is a light stylish jacket. A denim jacket is the ultimate layering piece. In fact, most layered casual wear outfits feature denim as their centrepiece. Want some more layers? Wear a bandana around your neck.
Keep in mind, you should be able to see all your layers in the finished look. To make my urban clothing inspired look a bit nicer, I like to wear a belt on my waist. (Check how I do it here).
WEAR YOUR LOGO WITH PRIDE
Since the late 1990’s, it’s become a bit of a no-no to walk around with a logo on your chest. In a luxury world, it is considered as an ostentatious and, consequently, that one has a poor taste. In streetwear, however, a logo shows a little more than just how much you paid for your clothes. It’s a badge of honour and an acknowledgement that you’re aligned with a particular style tribe.
The easiest way to celebrate the return of this trend is to wear a logo T-shirt. This won’t break your bank, nor it is going to change your style completely. Keep in mind, you do not necessarily need to buy a top with a brand’s logo. I would recommend going for a T-shirt with a cute print, text or patterns. This will ensure that you can wear it as a part of your streetwear outfit as well as fit it nicely into your normal wardrobe scenery.

Getting the colour right is the biggest aspect of proper streetwear outfit
To be safe when layering street wear, it is always a good idea to ensure that your sneakers or general footwear match with what you wear on top. When layering many garments, it is very easy to colour clash. To be safe, you can either choose neutral colours such as khaki, grey, black and navy or choose bright colours that complement each other. I think, the more colours you choose the more interesting the look. To avoid colour clashing choose a central colour and arrange the rest of the colours to complement it.
I would highly recommend updating your wardrobe with a comfortable footwear. Trainers, sneakers and lifestyle Nike’s are a must-haves in every fashionista’s closet at the moment. Make sure you keep up! Geeting your pair right will save you from the headaches every morning when deciding what to wear. Moreover, it will help you look effortlessly stylish and show others that you are a pro in creating street style outfits. Choose the right – preferably neutral – colour, comfortable model and good quality pair. This will save your money long-term because the perfect pair will match all your outfits and last longer.
