Coping With The Challenge of Stress

We all feel stressed out from time to time, yet the challenge with stress is that it tends to hit us most when we most need to be at our best; rendering us almost paralysed in a state of anxiety, tension and exhaustion – meaning we find ourselves in a reactive rather than responsive state.

Of course, there are the emotional effects of stress as described above, but also, there’s a physical response to stress that over time can make us look much older than we are no matter what expensive beauty regime you follow.

Indeed, many of us experience “stress headaches” when we are feeling particularly stressed which is a tangible sign of the negative physiological effect stress has on the body.  There’s evidence to suggest that stress is a key component of serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and stroke. It’s therefore important we find ways to manage stress.

There are many stress management techniques recommended, from mindfulness and meditations to making better decisions, for instance, if you feel particularly stressed at the prospect of studying a masters course at university, you could look into a more flexible alternative, as there are all sorts of courses that you can take online; even down to supply chain management online programs that mean you don’t get the lifestyle stress of having to balance attending a physical course with everything else in your life.

The reality is, however, that you will never eradicate stress from your life – you, therefore, need to find ways to mitigate (meaning to lessen) and manage your stress on a day-to-day basis.  Here are three ways you can do just that.

EXERCISE

Exercise is proven to be stress reducing, as long as it is done in moderation.  Group exercise classes such as Zumba and aerobics can be particularly good for stress relief, as they allow you to lose yourself in the music whilst forcing you to focus solely on the moves – thus giving your brain a rest from all the overthinking that comes from stress.

Another great stress relieving way to exercise is to look into boxing for fitness; as today, many people are boxing with a partner that holds the pads with no intention to fight in a ring – just as a great way to get fit and relieve stress.

DISCONNECT

There are many ways you can disconnect, for some people, it’s as simple as reading a book whilst for other they need to practice something a little more structured such as yoga or meditation.  In truth, one of the best and cheapest ways to manage your stress is to walk in nature as this naturally calms you down; particularly if you’re walking by water.

NURTURE YOURSELF

It’s important to nurture and nourish yourself.  This could be something as simple as a warm bath with some essential oils or as elaborate as a spa weekend.  The most important way you can nourish and replenish yourself, when it comes to stress management, however, is to ensure you get enough sleep.
