Like a lot of things, we can feel unconfident during different periods of our lives. We can feel uneasy about making new friendships or starting new relationships, we can be nervous about big financial decisions we make about houses or big purchases, and we can feel a crisis in confidence when it comes to personal gain and development like our careers. It is never easy to find your feet at first, especially if you are reaching out and taking on new challenges. However, it doesn’t need to be this way. I wanted to share with you some of the ways that your confidence can be boosted when it comes to making career changes. I hope it gives you the boost you need to take on a fresh challenge.
Bigging up your resume
Often your resume is your first point of contact when it comes to changing your career, so if you are serious about leaping into a new job or going for that promotion, then you need to start at this point. It is your chance to make a decent first impression. Take the time to tailor your resume to the job you want. The outlining experience you already have and skills and attributes that are relevant to the new job. Use positive language to describe yourself, and don’t be afraid to include things on there that you may not see as relevant. Courses and qualifications you have gained, even if not necessarily directly to do with the job, shows your initiative and willingness to learn.
Learning outside of the job
If you are serious about making the change but feel you need more qualifications or experience to obtain it, then why not work and learn outside of your current job. Learning from home or attending college in your spare time not only helps you gain the knowledge you need but shows that you are dedicated. Whether that is something like an advanced standing msw for things like social care, or whether it is to do with accounting or gaining certain certificates and accreditations, it can help you take the step in the right direction.
Self-care is important
Sometimes when it comes to the confidence it starts with you, and you can’t pour from an empty cup. So a great tip is to ensure that you do all that you can to look after yourself. Self-care is many things. For you, it might mean getting a good night’s sleep. It might mean that you take the time to do things that you enjoy in the evenings or weekends that you have free. It might be things like enjoying nice food or settling down with a good book. Taking the time to fill yourself back up can help you to feel energised, which in turn means that you feel more confident attacking the daily grind.
Having a good support network around you
Finally, a good support network around you can really boost you, especially when things are a little tough. It might be that your support network is your partner or your friends, it could be your family or even coworkers. But having a positive network around you can work wonders.
I hope that these tips and suggestions help boost your confidence when it comes to making career changes.
